Petone Settlers Museum’s Chinese Opera Day
4 February 12 noon to 3pm An opportunity to see into the fascinating world of the Chinese Opera, the make-up, the costumes, the music at the Settlers on Britannia Street (same building as Petone Library). Presented by New Zealand Wellington Chinese Operatic Society Inc.
Chinese opera synthesizes music, drama, dancing, and acrobatics along with very elaborate costumes and a minimum of props, according to traditions and customs dating back as far as the twelfth century. The colourful and elaborately embroidered costumes and sophisticated make-up techniques give both magnificent effect and dramatic expression. Much of the music and the lyrics are derived from historical events.
Join us behind the scenes of the Chinese Opera and see the careful preparation and finally a performance.
