Chines New Year Wellington

Celebrate Chinese New Year, the Year of the Dog … heaps of FREE fun!
Colour-in giant dogs masked out in Civic Square – chalk provided - Stan Chan will be chalking the Square in between 12 – 2pm, then you can pick up your free chalk and help colour it in.
Funky Fashion launches Chinese New Year 2006
‘New Clothes for the New Year’ – a funky fashion dance show showcasing Asian inspired clothing in Civic Square: Two well-known fashion designers will have their contemporary couture on display alongside traditional costumes .
Firecrackers and lion Dance will start the show at 2.00pmSophie Voon (Voon label – an established Wellington designer) Sharon Ng (Ng Designs label – internationally renown designer based in Christchurch) A display of traditional Chinese costumes
First show2.10 – 3.00 – Ng and Voon Fashion, plus traditional costume, alternate with Hip Hop and Funk Dance
BREAK - 3.05 – 3.30Second show3.30 – 4.30 - Ng and Voon Fashion, plus traditional costume, alternate with Hip Hop and Funk
Enter the cuddly, soft toy dog competition – for the biggest, smallest, most from one child 4.30 – announce winners of Soft Toy Dog competitions
PLUS - A stunning display of Beijing Opera figurines (courtesy of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China), in Capital E.

Paint the Town Red and be into WIN
Red is a very lucky colour and especially so at Chinese New Year, so help bring louck to Wellington and beautif weather for Festival Day - dress up in Red. Spot prizes will be awarded during the entertainment programme at Frank Kitts Park for those dressed in funky red.
Asian Market – 11am to 3pm
Transformed into a bustling marketplace, the Events Centre is the place where you can buy a myriad of Chinese arts and crafts, books, plus food stalls from a variety of community groups and restaurants. An exciting stage programme brings together community demonstrations and international craftspeople from Shanghai, China:
Spring festival folk figures made from flour
Boiling toffee thrown onto a hot plate in the shape of zodiac signs, fish or animals, which is then edible
Paper silhouettes of your profile – while you wait
Intricate needle piercing of lanterns to allow filtered light through

Parade – 2pm to 3pm
Starting from Courtenay Place through to Taranaki Wharf, dragons, Lions, and local community groups will participate in a colourful parade, complete with booming firecrackers.
Cultural Entertainment Programme – 3pm to 5:30pm
A wide variety of cultural and community groups will perform a fantastic cultural entertainment programme at Frank Kitts Park. In the event of wet or bad weather, this programme will relocate to the Events Centre.
