History
Three members of the Wellington Chinese Sports and Cultural Centre started the Wellington Chinese New year festival, in Feb 2002.It was centred around Courtenay Place, and a small crowd was expected, however, a huge crowd filled this the Asian part of town and organisers were literally blown away with the response.
Since then the Festival has grown significantly each year, and the Festival is now organsied by the Asian Events Trust. There was a huge turnout for 2005; 20 - 30,000 people estimated to have attended the parade, asian market and entertainment on Festival Day, with 100,000 watching the spectacular fireworks display that evening, brought to the Festival by the Beijing Municipal Authority.
In addition the Festival now includes a range of activities spread throughout the two week period of Chinese New Year. For 2005 these included; Chalking of the Square - a large Rooster was chalked in Civic Square, Schools programme - 1,500 children in 13 schools had Kite making workshops in their schools, Kite Festival - thousands turned up to fly kites and see a kite display.

2005 - YEAR OF THE ROOSTER
Biggest, brightest and best celebration yet!Wellington turned on the sunniest and calmest day, and this together with Rugby 7s and the Global Yacht Challenge ensured a fantastic crowd to enjoy the activities planned to welcome in the Year of the Rooster.
