The festival
The Auckland Lantern Festival is organised and sponsored by Auckland City in partnership with the Asia New Zealand Foundation.
As one of Auckland's most popular summer events, the seventh Lantern Festival will feature hundreds of beautiful lanterns, including brand new designs from China, to bring Chinese New Year celebrations to a glowing finale. There will be performers from New Zealand and overseas as well as crafts, fortune-telling, fireworks and martial arts displays.
Thousands of Aucklanders enjoy the Lantern Festival for its family entertainment, delicious food and amazing atmosphere.
The 2006 Lantern Festival welcomes the Year of the Dog in the Chinese zodiac. Since the Han Dynasty (206BC-221AD), the Chinese have celebrated the Lantern Festival on the fifteenth day of the first month of the lunar calendar.
The festival is the last event in a series of Chinese New Year celebrations
